Significance
Ashadhi Ekadashi, also known as Devshayani Ekadashi, falls on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in the Ashadha month. From this day, Lord Vishnu enters Yoga Nidra (cosmic sleep) and rests until Kartik Shukla Ekadashi (Devotthan).
For the Varkari sect, this is the holiest day. The Wari — the pilgrimage of millions walking to Pandharpur — reaches its peak on this day. The tradition of Sant Dnyaneshwar, Sant Tukaram and Sant Namdeo comes alive on this occasion.
Observing a fast on this day is said to give merit equal to 1,000 Ashwamedha yagnas and 100 Rajasurya yagnas. Satyanarayan Puja is performed on this day as it is traditional to offer special worship to Lord Vishnu before his cosmic rest.

Mythology
Once King Mandhata asked Sage Pulastya why Ekadashi holds such importance. The sage replied: When Lord Vishnu saw that sins on Earth were increasing, he created a Devi who was Ekadashi. He declared — whoever fasts on the day I begin and end my Yoga Nidra will have all their sins destroyed.
