Significance
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi — the birthday of Lord Ganesha. It is Maharashtra's greatest festival and is now celebrated with great enthusiasm across India for 10 days.

Mythology
Parvati created a boy from her bathing paste and breathed life into him — this was Ganesha. When Shiva returned home, Ganesha stopped him. Shiva grew angry and severed Ganesha's head.
