Significance
Shardiya Navratri is celebrated from Ashwin Shukla Pratipada to Navami — nine days of worshipping the nine forms of Maa Durga: Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri.
There are two main Navratris in a year — Chaitra (spring) and Shardiya (autumn). Shardiya Navratri is the larger. The tenth day is Vijayadashami (Dussehra) — victory of truth over falsehood.
For Tantra practitioners, Navratri holds special significance — worship of Baglamukhi, Kali, Chamunda and other Mahavidyas is extremely fruitful during these nine days.

Mythology
When the gods were tormented by Mahishasura's oppression, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva combined their powers to manifest Adishakti Mahadurga. The Devi fought for nine days and on the tenth day slew Mahishasura. That is why we celebrate nine days of Navratri and Vijayadashami on the tenth.
