Significance
Shravan month (July-August) is Lord Shiva's most beloved month. Puranas describe that the Samudra Manthan (ocean churning) happened this month and Shiva consumed the Halahala poison — protecting the entire universe.
Performing Rudrabhishek, Mahamrityunjaya Jaap and offering Bilva leaves on each Monday of Shravan brings Shiva's special grace. Any Shiva worship done this month is considered 108 times more fruitful.
The Kanwar Yatra also happens this month — devotees carry Gangajal and walk to their beloved Shiva temple. From Haridwar to Kashi — all of North India becomes immersed in Shiva.

Mythology
When the terrifying Kaalakuta poison emerged during Samudra Manthan, all gods were frightened. The three worlds began to burn. Then Lord Shiva stepped forward and drank all the poison. Parvati held his throat so the poison would not descend — this turned Shiva's throat blue and he became Neelkantha. The tradition of offering water in Shravan is an expression of gratitude for this act.
