When all planets in the birth chart fall between Rahu and Ketu, Kaal Sarp Dosh is formed. Learn its 12 types and the special puja at Trimbakeshwar.

How Does Kaal Sarp Dosh Form?

A birth chart has 12 houses and 9 planets. Rahu and Ketu always sit exactly opposite each other (180° apart). When the remaining seven planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) all fall within the hemispherical arc between these two nodes, Kaal Sarp Dosh is formed.

This is an astronomical configuration that occurs in the birth charts of some people in every generation. Estimates suggest roughly 10–15% of people in India have this dosh.

The 12 Types of Kaal Sarp Dosh

Each type is named for the house Rahu occupies: Ananta (Rahu in 1st), Kulik (2nd), Vasuki (3rd), Shankhpal (4th), Padma (5th), Mahapadma (6th), Takshak (7th), Karkotak (8th), Shankhachuda (9th), Ghatak (10th), Vishadhar (11th) and Sheshanaga (12th).

Each type has a different effect. Takshak Kaal Sarp (7th house) creates obstacles in marriage, while Karkotak (8th house) can bring accidents and health issues.

Symptoms of Kaal Sarp Dosh

Common symptoms include: recurring dreams of snakes, success falling short of one's effort, delay or difficulties in marriage, challenges in conceiving children, sudden financial losses, and obstacles in career or business.

However, note that these symptoms can also arise from other doshas. Only an expert analysis of the full horoscope can confirm whether Kaal Sarp Dosh is truly present.

Kaal Sarp Dosh Puja at Trimbakeshwar

Trimbakeshwar (Nashik) is the most revered and powerful place for Kaal Sarp Dosh puja. Here Lord Shiva resides in His Jyotirlinga form and the temple has an extraordinary capacity to pacify the negative energy of Rahu and Ketu.

The puja procedure includes Shodasha Sanskara, Nagabali, Narayan Nagabali and the Kaal Sarp Shanti path. A full day's puja takes 4–6 hours and can only be performed by trained priests.

Home Remedies for Kaal Sarp Shanti

Alongside the puja, some daily practices are helpful: Jalabhishek on Shivalinga every Monday, Nag Puja on Nag Panchami, daily chanting of the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra (108 times), and never harming snakes.

For charitable acts: offering a silver naga at a snake temple, placing belpatra on the Shivalinga and feeding the poor are considered especially beneficial.
