What is Sankalpa?
A Sankalpa is a firm mental resolve — a vow you make before the Divine. Taking a Sankalpa before puja is a declaration: "I, at this time, for this purpose, am performing this puja."
In a Sankalpa you state your name, gotra (lineage), location (country, city, village), the date (year, month, fortnight, tithi, day, nakshatra) and the purpose of the puja. It is a cosmic address of who you are, where you are, and why you are worshipping.
The Meaning of the Sankalpa Mantra
"Om Vishnu Vishnu Vishnu. Shrimad Bhagavato Mahapurushasya Vishnoraajnaya pravartamanasya..." — the mantra begins with three invocations of Vishnu, establishing that this puja proceeds by the Lord's command and through His power.
Then follows the reckoning of time — Kalpa, Manvantara, Yuga, year. This reminds us that we stand in a single small moment of infinite time. In the face of this vastness, the ego naturally dissolves.
The Importance of Gotra in Sankalpa
Gotra is the lineage of the rishi from whom your family descends. Stating your gotra in the Sankalpa means you are connecting with the unbroken tradition of your ancestors — a line going back thousands of years.
If you do not know your gotra, you may say "Kashyapa Gotra" — the most ancient and widespread rishi lineage, considered the primordial ancestor of all humanity. This is not a falsehood but a reverence for the sage who stands at the root of us all.
How Does Sankalpa Make Puja More Powerful?
