Sade Sati comes three times in every person's life. Learn when it starts, its three phases, and how to earn Saturn's grace.
What is Sade Sati?
Saturn (Shani) transits through each zodiac sign in approximately 2.5 years. When Saturn enters the sign before your birth sign, Sade Sati begins. It continues through your birth sign (2.5 years) and the sign after (2.5 years) — totalling 7.5 years, hence "Sade Sati" (seven and a half).
This occurs three times in every person's life — in childhood/youth, middle age and old age. Each occurrence brings a different quality of experience.
The Three Phases of Sade Sati
First Phase (Rising): Saturn is in the sign before your birth sign. Mental anxiety, family tension or a change of residence can occur.
Second Phase (Peak): Saturn directly transits your birth sign. This is considered the most challenging phase — career, health and relationships may face pressures. Yet this phase also teaches life's most important lessons.
The Positive Side of Sade Sati
Shani is called the God of Karma and the Supreme Judge. Sade Sati is a period of testing, not punishment. For those who work honestly, maintain patience and serve others — this period often becomes one of great ascent.
Many great leaders, entrepreneurs and artists achieved their greatest accomplishments during their Sade Sati.
Remedies for Sade Sati
For Shani Shanti: visit a Shani temple on Saturday and light a sesame oil lamp; donate mustard oil; wear blue or black clothing; chant "Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah" 108 times.
Practical remedies: donate black sesame seeds, black chickpeas, blankets or shoes to the poor on Saturdays. Fast on Saturdays. Do not harm any living being — crows and dogs are especially dear to Shani Dev.
